Steam no David. Patience maybe.
You'd better pack all shorts in a suitcase and get out of the tropics David. Climate change is coming. Al Gore said so, and no ones yet to pick holes in his 'science' . . . no wait !! - Nick
"Would you rather the Hoopla was just pages of thoughtless preaching to the soft left progressive converted or engendered debate and thought rather than self gratifying back slapping"
Yes Peter T . . . they would. - Nick
Isn't it an unconscious hierarchal thing? Sometimes, often - don't know.
I have 2 sons and a daughter who was the eldest. Don't know if that made a difference but I always told my daughter that if she wasn't comfortable in a situation to kick, bite, scream, fight her way out of it if she could and both of us, her parents, would back her to the hilt. She got that advice from both of us not just me. And she's happily, very happily married to the loveliest man who loves their kids with passion.
And my sons were taught to respect all females. To put up with them, ignore if they wanted, walk away, not engage in any battles. This was because of little things they would come home with. Girls tripping them on the steps. That sort of thing. I said the girls probably just wanted to be noticed. Thought you were cool and hip. Ignore. Know it's a pain but that's life. Move on. I was always trying to explain female behaviour. Teachers especially. Some were just ridiculous. One teacher told the boys she would throw them in the rubbish bin if they did this or that - forget. And my little boy was terrified she'd do exactly that. Grade 2. Had to face her down and tell her he was too scared to come to school. That sort of thing does not build respect. Women can be their own worst enemies sometimes. That's not meant to be a generalisation. I'm saying it like it was for my family. And my daughter? Was taught to respect her brothers as equals. They were told to mind each other, look after each other and be there for each other. And they still are. It worked. My boys treat their partners as equals. Their partners are as well-educated, well-travelled. They have their tiffs but there's no passive aggression or crap going on. They demonstrate their love for each other openly and without embarrassment. When I observe them together I see nothing but engagement as equals. And love. Real honest to goodness love. They're aware.
I wish it was so for everybody. - RhodaD
Are you sure you're reading the right article MickyD. The only people getting into a 'froth and lather' here are those that can't believe the Hoopla would publish an article that might even vaguely support what Abbott is doing.
Let's just take a look at some of the 'rational and sensible debate" you refer to in response to Elle's article:
“so in the interest of balance are we now fed bullshit”
“I agree – this is not balance this is bullshit”
“this is taken straight from one of the mad monk’s glossy brochures”
“A less kind view of this article on this website would be “click bait” or dog whistling”
“Me thinks this is a troll..”
“This is a tongue-in-cheek article,right? Fail.”
“This is a pisstake yeah?”
“Nick off Elle”
“This is a joke right?”
“I simply cannot decide if this is a piss take or not!”
“the contents whihc may be politely refrred to as bullshit”
And my personal favourite from Shirley
“What an unworthy article for The Hoopla. I don’t think she should be invited to write for The Hoopla again”
And there has been plenty of counter arguments put to Francesca's AIMN cut and pastes. You just haven't read them yet :) - Nick
All very well to get stuck into the author, would you rather the Hoopla was just pages of thoughtless preaching to the soft left progressive converted or engendered debate and thought rather than self gratifying back slapping. Abbot got elected because the others failed to set the agenda, make the narrative clear, concise, understandable the others failed to take the "great unwashed along with them". Maybe they spent a little to much time with their fellow G8 Group of Uni Graduates, in focus groups with other lawyers and party hacks. The problem with hanging out with PLU is that some else half as bright and half as caring can come along and cut your lunch. Well done Hoopla keep the diverse content coming. - Peter T
MickyD, yes of course, anyone who has their own opinion which differs to your own is automatically a troll. See my previous comment re: name calling.
Also how can you actually sit there and describe Francesca's cut and paste jobs as well put arguments? It's just the same old tired alarmist propaganda. - bb
Micky, I'm certainly not an apologist for anyone. I mearly point out and place appropriate scorn on those who come here to have their views validated rather than challenged. I'm certainly no troll. If you see yourself in my observations that does not make me a troll, it makes me an accurate observer of the human condition.
Masturbatory confirmation bias is precisely what the you and the majority of others come here for. It makes you feel good to spit your bile and venom at those who you despise, and the fact that so many others have got their pants down and are going for it too ... well that just makes you feel like it's OK, kind of even legitimate even.
Have a good look through the thread, it's all there from 'I thought this was satire' to 'I was waiting for the punch line' through to the wonderfully passive-agressive 'I was really looking forward to this article because I was sure the Government must have got something right ...'
My advice. Open your mind ... and pull up your pants. - Alistair
Alistair -global warming is also inaccurate as some places will be cooler and wetter. Certainly in the immediate future. Climate change involves the intensification of existing weather patterns.
I agree with you that some decision makers believed the term 'climate change' was more anodyne than 'global warming' which conjures the sense of a pizza oven turned on high.
Of course we don't have to worry here because we will be saved by the green army and loggers. - Dianne
You've run out of steam then Nick. Never mind. Perhaps you should focus on finding your fingers.
At least progressives are progressive bb, rather than regressive. - David
Nick. I'm also a bigot according to RM but we all know that when the progressives run out of arguments they always resort to name calling and abuse. - bb
