It might be easy to skip through the stories filling news pages around the world – from the Washington Post to the Courier Mail – all discussing the death of 92 year-old American journalist Helen Thomas.
Yet, for anyone keen on genuine free speech and democratic, responsible government, Helen’s life and career should be celebrated, as she fought for those tenets every day of her working (and one suspects, non-working) life.
She was a towering, inspirational figure for women journalists. Everywhere. Certainly for this young female cadet in Melbourne in the mid-70s, she was a hero, especially, given we shared the same name.
