I can tell you Ilsa, attitudes like " ‘boys will be boys’ or ‘he only hurts you because he likes you’, the use of ‘girl’ as an insult" are not being condoned let alone taught in the pre-school environment. The people pushing for this (teaching about domestic violence in pre-schools) clearly have no idea what's currently being taught in preschools today. No educator responsible for 3 - 5 year olds would tolerate any of the attitudes listed above, from a child or a parent. As I've said numerous times, preschool children are already being taught to be independent, confident, empathetic, respectful of themselves and others etc. Perhaps Robyn Cotterell-Jones should spend some time in a pre-school setting to understand what's already being done. - Nick
bb i call you a bigot because that's clearly what you are as evidenced consistently by your posts
clearly you are a mouthpiece for the liberal party who blindly follows their dogma regardless of the truth, i strongly suspect you are one of their newly tax payer funded spin doctors paid specifically to monitor social media
your hypocrisy knows no bounds, you attack people for labelling abbot for what he clearly is while defending the person who disgustingly stood in front of signs calling a sitting PM a witch and a bitch, a man who also supported the disgusting comments made by the revolting 2gb right wing mouth piece regarding the death of Gillard's father
and your simpleton comments about a ship getting stuck in sea ice as evidence suggesting ice reductions arent occurring beggars belief
please go back to the murdoch rags where you can keep your head buried in the sand whilst feeding your ignorance - RM

Which mainstream media and popular culture are you referring to when you say "It’s all about the man who’s “not getting enough”, the girlfriend who’s “not putting out”, or the dichotomy of the slut/stud. Older women are wedged into the roles of mother hen, corporate ice queen, or bored housewife" ?
Unless you're watching re-runs of re-runs most of the media today whether it be "advertisers, TV programmers, and film producers" frequently show that "Women want it just as much as men."
I used to love watching Sex & The City. Got hooked from the very first episode and couldn't get enough. Funny thing is though, my wife always hated it. She's not a fan of Carrie Bradshaw's character at all, but she would constantly tell me what a load of crap it was, and that women just don't talk like that when they get together. I was quite disappointed. - Nick
Merrid!! maybe u miss understood me, and that's fine I didn't mean anything bad by it. All was trying to say is I'm all for teaching kids these topic. - Roberto lipoma
They should pack it up and let new talent shine thru. I mean haven't u got enough money! Jesus!!! - Roberto.L
Hi Dianne. We are social beings. We each have our own names, lives and are unique. Trouble is some people in government and elsewhere don't recognise and value this stuff. All that top and bottom thinking. - ro.watson
Sometimes I wonder if the clarion call to be an individual is corrupting or has corrupted our society.
I went to bed thinking of those people who are so self-absorbed that they are having their eyeballs tattooed lurid shades presumably because they are after that Look-At-Me allure.
I woke up wondering why some folk here seem to think so little of themselves and the rest of us that they support a government which is in the process of dismantling the scaffolding which supports our way of life.
Those people to whom I am referring won't agree of course. The reasons why are probably a mystery even to themselves.
Take the proposed changes to the media ownership laws for example.
Why do the followers of Blue Tie ideology think those proposed changes are in the national interest or their personal interest?
All Turnbull's honeyed words about new media are as sticky as they are sweet.
The grim fact is that the fact gatherers and presenters are still by and large in the mainstream media. The Internet is a source of diverse commentary, gossip and biased rhetoric, all based on or reacting to boots-on-the-ground reports.
What happens when you change media ownership laws to give powerful voices even more volume? It gives big media interests even more latitude to influence political debate and outcomes.
It is the mainstream media which still shapes what we talk about. What they choose not to report is just as important as daily headlines.
It looks like we are going to end up with a less diverse but more powerful mainstream media and an emasculated ABC.
Hallelujah. - Dianne
Well you made me laugh Sandy. While Shorten was blathering about health and education for Western Australians, I was thinking about W.A's former Liberal treasurer, Troy Buswell, who according to our Liberal Premier Colin Barnett has had a breakdown. This is a good word to describe a kind of mental collapse. I know what such a collapse feels like and once the premier used these words , I thought it was a bit optimistic to be expecting a return to work within 2-3 weeks. Beyond blue, I suppose is trying to prevent such collapses by getting us to seek treatment sooner?
Buswell has now resigned from the Cabinet. It is a sad fact that VIPs must go interstate or overseas for treatment in private facilities? Buswell apparently went to Sydney. Perth is less of a small town than it used to be but apparently too small for VIPs seeking treatment in private or public health facilities. So Shorten, about health and education~ for those who can afford to pay~ pay. What are your suggestions for sustainable work, education and health?
I honour your question RhodaD. I hope in the next budget the government continues to sustain partnership projects to prevent homelessness. In W.A everything is expensive after mining here~ rents have sky-rocketed, ditto food and services. Poverty is inter-generational. - ro.watson
Katie D. Instead of that sense of blame and frustration re the mothers who stay victims and ignore their children's needs, I wonder if you comprehend how unfriendly the family court system is to women who leave and try to take the kids away from dad, for the children's safety, especially if they do not have the money (big bucks required) and a well-documented history? Where do they go when half the women who try for refuge accommodation are turned away? Why blame the victim rather than the perpetrator -ask rather why does he abuse rather than why doesn't she leave? Rather than where she sits she is so demoralised she believes his assessment of her as worthless and believes his threats to track her down, kill her and the kids if she tries to leave. Police do not arrest on threats. Victims need patient encouragement and education to see their capacities to escape safely, they need to be informed that the kids do know what's going on, are harmed by it, that help is out there, it is REALLY hard to escape a determined abuser but it can be done - well except for the 25 or so women who are murdered for trying to leave in NSW every year. Once again, perhaps if your victim had learned about all these behaviours that combined make 'DV' she may have been able to see the traps and avoid them altogether. She may have had school learning but they did not identify DV. as being the combination of many aspects of abuse styles. - robyn
