• Hi Patrice. Your post made me want to weep. Is it possible for you to take matters into your own hands as it were and start your own business? Or purchase an existing business? Get a new set of skills and set up something that you can sell? You're obviously motivated. I hope I'm not coming off as flippant. The very best of luck to you sister. - Sandy
  • Please bring back Foxy Ladies and Ivy (?) the slightly mad psychotropic gardener. And after reading your list I feel slightly embarrassed: "Living with Crazy Buttocks" does not quite prop open my bathroom door but it is an essential companion ...! - Jane
  • Love your work Emma But like others, I do often wonder why the media have paid so little attention to the Ashby/Brough affair. Especially considering their attention and time given to the Gillard AWU (non) story. I won't bore you with my thoughts regarding the media's (non) treatment of Abbotts constant porky pies. - janet
  • my point re the above is that all the comments are by Left supporters..I think you should all truly listen and watch with an open mind to the ABC. If you were a right leaning journalist would you apply for a job with the ABC,, well you might, but you would be feeling pretty alone in the lunch room I'd think. Whilst I totally respect Emma and her interviewing technique as probably the most balanced, the same can't be said for other ABC commentators. Everybody has their subtle way of getting their particular political bent across without putting themselves into the position of being blatantly biased. - denise carrol
  • Kaz - my husband and I loved "Up the Duff". It was a highlight of every week during my first pregnancy 10 years ago to lie in bed together and laugh at where we were up to. Now it's time (like the correspondent above) to buy Girl Stuff for my daughter and Menopause for me. - Sally
  • Emma, add me to that enquiry, I'd also like to know who is paying Ashby's legal bills, and how come Senator Brandis has so much influence with the Federal Police. - JoanneH
  • I'm 52 and only just bought an apron a month ago. They're back in vogue. Very practical. However as an unemploymentista, I feel that at least the Liberals would offer me not "WorkChoices" but more choices to work. Which from perspective equals: inclusion, equality, respect. - Anna
  • Kaz, this column made me weep with laughter, horror and recognition. My own top two Statements from Strangers: 1 (on hearing I was an author) 'I don't read books. I get all my information from the internet.' 2 (just before I was about to give a public talk) 'I read your last book... (pause)... I didn't like it much... (pause)... what was it about again?' - Linda Jaivin

$62MIL TO MARRY MY LESBIAN DAUGHTER

Gigi Chao has been getting a lot of friend requests on Facebook since her father, a Hong Kong billionaire, put a $62 million pricetag on her sexuality.

Chao is a lesbian in a long-term committed relationship and reportedly just married her girlfriend Sean Eav, with whom she looks extremely happy in this photo.

However, it didn’t stop her real estate tycoon father Cecil Chau Sze-Tsung going public and offering a small cash incentive – HK$500 million – to a prospective husband who may lure her away from lesbianism.

It won’t surprise you to know that same sex unions are not recognized in Hong Kong. They’re certainly not recognized by Cecil Chau.

Despite the news that his daughter married her girlfriend of seven years in France, Chao told BBC News Asia that his daughter was still single and needed a good husband. His generous offer, he said, had already generated many replies from potential suitors.

“It is an inducement to attract someone who has the talent but not the capital to start his own business,” Mr Chao said.

“I don’t mind whether he is rich or poor. The important thing is that he is generous and kind-hearted.

“Gigi is a very good woman with both talents and looks. She is devoted to her parents, is generous and does volunteer work.”

Such global humiliation for her, such gargantuan denial from him.

According to the London Daily Telegraph, Gigi’s Facebook and Twitter accounts have been inundated with friend requests and followers, but she has written: “No longer accepting Facebook friend requests… sorry.”

The Manchester University architecture graduate has also been reported as saying that she found the news of her father’s marriage bounty “entertaining”.

It does seem like an entertaining chap. Now 76, he has a reputation in Hong Kong as a flamboyant playboy, has never married but has claimed to have slept with 10,000 women.

Despite his public plea for a man to marry his daughter, Chau does insist that he would not force her to marry a man against her will.

Gee, thanks Dad!

We know Dads can be embarrassing, but this is ridiculous.

I think this is hilarious! At least Gigi has a sense of humour. My dad is great, and out of all my family is the most accepting of all. He has a granddaughter (my daughter) who is a lesbian and HE announced it at a family get-together and told everyone how proud he was of her. He also has a daughter who is a heroin addict and has rescued her from many a dark, dingy hole (not me, my sister) and so I guess in the big scheme of things your sexual orientation is really a minimal concern.

I think initially it was hilarious – as if denying his daughters lesbian marriage would somehow make it unhappen, but when a father can’t embrace and support his daughter as she is I find it very sad. And this whole marriage thing is baffling – if he loves his daughter why does he want to saddle her with some freeloader who is only in it for the money?

MoniqueN, when I say ‘hilarious’ I mean it in an – interesting observation of the eccentricities of this man. I agree with you that it seems bizarre that he would rather she leave a happy relationship and shack up with someone who is obviously only in it for the money, but then he goes on to say that he would not make her marry a man against her will, so the whole thing is really for nought?

I wasn’t intending to criticize – the bombast of the whole thing does make it very humorous as does Gigi’s gracious acceptance of the situation.

I just wonder if they’re going to let us get a look at the suitors who come out of the woodwork to apply for this generous offer? Because that would be hilarious.

Wow, it’s like an updated fairytale in which the king offers part of his kingdom for the man who can save his daughter.

However, the story is ruined by the princess not actually being in need of rescue.

When I read this story I was incensed and hoped she would reject the offer. Now I’m thinking a congenial gay man friend could be roped in – take the cash and run – they could share an apartment building/condo to facilitate pantomimes of married bliss when the olds come to visit… Am I too cynical?!

Helen – a excellent idea! Wouldn’t be the first time that such an arrangement has been played out! If this story is true, then the game’s on isn’t it. Mind you, I can’t see Gigi going along with this. Good movie plot, even if not a new one.

It seems some of the respondents here either haven’t read the article or are attempting some kind of humorous mockery. It’s clearly stated that they’re a couple of lesbians who have recently married. Why would you make the comment that you thought Sean was a man if you had read the article.

Maybe you should read the story and think before you make this kind of comment. Surely we have enough people speaking before engaging the brain. Maybe you didn’t realise, but this type of comment perpetuates the stereotypical images of lesbians.

Sounding like an irritable ‘schoolmarm’ here, but just so tired of the ignorant comments which are mouthed by the masses. Yes, we all forget at times…even Germaine Greer. Bur pausing and reflecting before you speak can only contribute to the upliftment and growth of a multi-faceted society.

I have to agree that making jokes about Sean – who yes is not particularly feminine but still clearly female is a pretty poor response.

Apparently Gigi has received 200 proposals of marriage from Bulgaria, Nigeria and Oklahoma (???) – to which her response is ‘flattered but no thank you’ – which is about five times as polite as I would be able to manage under the circumstances.

I made the comment that I thought Sean was a man as she looks masculine. The name doesn’t help either.

as a lesbian who experienced negative reactions from my parents many moons ago I felt sorry for the daughter and her partner who the father is obviously pretending doesn’t exist. Then I read the comments and well…is it just me or are there more and more judgemental folks commenting at the hoopla lately?
