  • Stay strong. I left my husband 3 years ago, and after a year of debating pros and cons in my head, it all crystallised in the thought "I can't do this any more". I won't pretend that it was easy, but 3 years on we're both in good relationships and our kids are doing well. They have 2 happy parents, who are careful to put them first and not in the middle of any issues we have with each other. I can't say we're friends, but we'll always have a relationship of sorts because of the kids. I know with absolute certainty that this was the best decision I could have made. - AK

They've made great strides in the USA recently, with bills in 42 States currently. There are all sorts of clever ways to restrict access to abortion, and that will be Cory Bernardi's brief in the new government. He spends much of his time in the USA studying their methods. As long as there is religion in the world there will always be a threat to abortion, especially free abortion (eg. under Medicare). - Tony W
  • I agree with comments about Germaine's crack about Julia's bum. Not needed, and part of the media misogyny that rules at the moment. I was surprised by it, given Germaine's commitment to gender equality. I think Julia Gillard has done a great job under constant fire from all sides. This treatment of Julia Gillard while she is Prime Minister has really uncovered a deeply misogynistic streak in Australia for me. In the face of this Julia Gillard is highly professional, poised and witty, gets on with the job despite a daily barrage of disparaging personal attacks. She deserves another chance to lead the country. - marybperth

It's always been MY responsibility to walk the tightrope of not being a "stuck up bitch" by allowing any guy who wanted it access to me (via a conversation, look, catcall, grope) vs keeping myself safe (covered up, at home after dark, in a chastity belt). Why is that MY responsibility? And it's a no-win situation - you want me available and you want me chaste. Can't have it both ways buddy!! - Panda
  • Great article Germaine - I know even among my more Lib-inclined & politically disengaged friends, there's an increasing alarm about the vicious treatment of JG so I'm praying that this, & articles like this, may swing the tide back in ALP favour. Personally though, I'm voting for ALP because I like the majority of what they have achieved in office - NDIS, plain packaging laws, carbon pricing, NBN rollout, Gonski reforms & so on - rather than just the fact that the PM is a woman. Like Jacqueline & others, I would never vote for the likes of Jule Bishop or the even more awful Sophie Mirabella in a million years - not because of their gender but because I hate their politics. And if the LNP & the Gillard mudslingers want to talk about personal morals, let's start with Mirabella & her fleecing of the family of her late, married ex-lover. Now THAT'S what I'd call disgusting... http://www.smh.com.au/national/mirabella-in-hot-seat-over-qc-lovers-dying-days-20110922-1knct.html - Caroline B

WHAT WAS SHE THINKING?

Has Germaine Greer delivered Prime Minister Julia Gillard an unkind boot in the backside?

“You’ve got a big arse, Julia, just get on with it,” she said last night on ABC TV’s Q&A to loud laughter from fellow panelists and the audience.

She also gave the PM some fashion advice about getting rid of those “bloody jackets”.

“They don’t fit and are poorly cut,” said Ms Greer.

Her comments have the Twittersphere chattering:

@Lisa_Wilkinson Gr8 discussion on Germaine Greer‘s comments re Julia’s derriere. If her young feminist self could see GG now – disappointed.

@stellajyoung Pretty confused about Germaine Greer commenting on Gillard’s clothing. Umm? #qanda

@whinwomen Interesting to see Germaine Greer comment on Julia Gillards clothes and “fat bum”. A new era of feminism, or Greer abandoning the cause?

@gem324 Germaine Greer what a disappointment, fueling the superficial and irrelevant debate about the PM’s wardrobe and appearance

@DrRickyLee I like to bash all politicians about anything, but even I would not do a Germaine Greer and discuss the PM’s backside on TV

@janecat60 disappointing Germaine Greer commenting on Julia Gillard’s clothing. That’s what blokes and silly girls in the media do

And then, there is the News Ltd commentator, Miranda Devine, who has this to say:

“For the birth-mother of 1960s feminism, Germaine Greer sure isn’t much of a sister.

Last night on the ABC’s Q&A panel show, she mocked the Prime Minister’s figure, saying Julia Gillard should face the fact she has a “big bum”.

Greer thinks the PM’s jackets are all wrong because from behind they go “horizontal”. According to her the jackets are cut too narrow at the hips.

Nice, really nice. No matter whether or not you support the PM’s policies, this is the lowest criticism. Because of her status as a feminist icon, Greer has just legitimised every misogynist to attack Gillard’s appearance. As if they need any encouragement.

It just shows her whole fem-philosophy was a pose, and because she was a good writer, pushy, reckless, witty and, yes, pretty, she built a career on trashing men and drawing attention to her love-starved self.

These days she makes a living out of trashing younger women.

The feminist goddess has feet of clay.”

So, over to you, Hooplarians… Has Germaine Greer delivered the most unkind cut of all to our PM?

Has she betrayed the sisterhood?

Or is this the kind of straight talking we’ve come to expect from Germaine?

I am disappointed by GG’s comment and the subsequent appeals on Twitter to “take it in context” or “lighten up.” If I turn on to a current affairs programme, I want to hear about policy opinions, not cutting asides about the another woman’s backside. Imagine if a man (or woman) sat on the panel and commented on GG’s figure. Or her dress code.

Keep to topic. And on that note, I found GG’s comments about kids and porn and about the war most insightful.

It’s easy to point score (or not) using nasty humour, but it doesn’t do anyone any favours.

Germaine was very good on Q&A and the comment on Ms Guillard’s clothing etc came after an excellent overview of what the Prime Minister is dealing with in a minority government. It was just a light hearted comment, too much being made of it. What about all the rest of her very considered comments through out the show, are they not worthy of some thought. Who is really betraying the sisterhood!

Germaine tends to really put ideas out there that rattle and worry people. The Q and A was excellent last night. The whole interview and her contributions were fantastic and she did make that comment as an aside – The same way any group of women would say that in private…..
We comment about what males wear all the time, whether they are bald, what they look like in cozzies – They are politicians just as Julia is a politician.

Why don’t you mention all the positive things Greer said about Gillard last night? This one remark, which was clearly said as a joke, was said after another panellist brought up dress sense. Gree praised the Prime MInister for being an effective administrator and hard worker.

It was an interesting performance to watch…Greer would be asked a question and not come close to answering it, ranbling here there and everywhere to say what she felt like and come across as funny…hence why the word “performance” kept coming to mind as I watched…I stand guilty of wishing I could take Julia shopping for a new wardrobe, but would I in a former writing life have expressed that publicly? Um, no. Her wardrobe (as long as it’s professional which it is), let alone her size, have zero bearing on her capacity to lead the nation and represent us internationally. Greer may think she was being funny, and she certainly got lots of laughs, but for all of us out there who live with poor body image every day because we don’t measure up to size 2 to 4 airbrushed perfection…Greer, you’re the one that needs to get on with it, not Julia.

I think the PM’s style has really evolved since she got the job and those jackets are rather flattering. No matter what we’d like to think, image is a big deal.
If I’d been on the panel I’d like to think I’d have called Germaine on it and told her not to be so bitchy. She is not a fashion expert, after all.
Funny to be having this discussion today alongside the article on “fat” being a terrible insult.
Did Germaine go too far? She always does. But I still think she’s a marvel.
Just another thing Julia will take in her stride, I imagine. I don’t know how she does it.She’s a marvel too.

Did you see what GG was wearing. Glass houses…Seriously though- she destroyed her own credibility, set the cause of older women trying to be seen as still having worthwhile contributions to make to society, and destroyed the excellent points that were being made about Gillard’s PMship. She is the first woman political leader in Australia that I remember to have the fortitude to stand still in the face of overwhelming pressure from so many fronts when women have been brought in to clean up the mess the blokes have made before them.

One of Australia’s first internationally recognised feminists commenting on the physical appearance of Australia’s first female prime minister – for laughs – woeful.

Worse, Germaine Greer gave PM-hating radio shock shocks fabulous material to work with this morning.

From another view, the comment reflects a disturbing commercial trend for the public figure – controversy sells whether you believe what you are saying or no.

GG is not the first person to use controversy to stay visible and therefore relevant to the speaker’s and writer’s circuit.

What a shame that everything that was said about what a great job Julia Gillard is doing as PM to get so much complex legislation through, and so much actually done, to have it all brought down by a flippant comment from Greer. It may have been ‘lighthearted’ but one of the problems in Australia is that scorpion stings get hidden under a veil of laughter- in some arenas this is called bullying! Those types of comments need to be made privately, not in such a public forum. I’m afraid Greer has lost me in recent years. She seems to have lost the plot on many fronts. Never, ever thought I’d agree with Miranda Devine!

Look, PM GIllard’s image- her media training, her voice coaching, ‘those’ jackets – it’s all been a freaking disaster.
The Gillard government has been trundling along, passing legislation and keeping us all afloat, and it has some complex messages to explain and ‘sell’.
What isn’t helping us as a nation, is the fact that Ms Gillard – a naturally engaging, warm and eloquent communicator- has been stymied from the get-go.
I’d love to see her reinvent her public image and communication style… in this day-and-age, they’re all part of the deal for any senior executive – male or female – whether we like it or not.
And let’s be honest, whom of us has not rolled her eyes at John Howard’s tracky-daks, and the fact that he too, magically reinvented his image by modernising his teeth and eyebrows and dumping the super-geek spectacles?
Ms Greer articulated last night that our current PM is a talented administrator and negotiator.
What a shame we’ve let a jacket-and-bum comment distract us from giving PM Gillard the support and affirmation her work deserves.

Where today in the media have we heard any of those good things GG said about our PM. I haven’t heard them but there has been a fair bit of fun had at the PM’s expense because of GG’s last throwaway line. GG, said herself, that she doesn’t get many gigs in Oz media so I guess she was out to make her Q&A appearance memorable for the wrong reasons. I was very disappointed as for some silly reason I thought GG, of all people, would stoop to use the PM’s body shape to get herself some laughs.

Watching the segment, I notice Germaine made some excellent comments about Julia, her strong points and the difficulty of her position as a politician. And when Germaine finished with this surprising throw away line about the PM’s style – which had already been brought up on the panel – her jokes got a lot of laughter from the studio audience.

Sadly, these unnecessary and ill thought-out wisecracks have completely overshadowed her other comments, and given ammunition to those keen to dismiss Germaine’s many achievements as a feminist and intellectual.

Greer made an off the cuff remark. Can we all just back off a bit. We all occasionally say ill-judged and thought out things, but we’re rarely on national TV when we do so.
She was 99% brilliant last night. Instead of picking on one mistake can we concentrate on her triumph?
No, certainly not, she is a woman and we’re not allowed to put a foot wrong ever.

GG gave such a positive account of JG’s leadership and valiant struggle with the media, and yes, it’s a shame that she felt it necessary to make the comment about her backside. Maybe GG got a little carried away after receiving applause for such sharp comments on porn, children and war and thought she should throw in a joke to lighten up a bit. All forgiven this end, esp when you think of the contribution GG has made to the movement over the years and society in general.

The problem was that her ‘one mistake’ which was pretty deliberate from where I was watching, was the one that got the greatest reaction from the audience, and the rest of the panel. That was the disappointing part. It completely overshadowed the rest of her performance and all the positive comments that were made about Gillard.

A bit of gratitude for what we fought for so that you could enjoy things like childcare, more family friendly workplaces etc would not go astray!! It’s time for older feminists to get more feisty again.

I guess Catherine you are calling GG out for not being a mother? As she has certainly worked and done the higher education bit.

Turn the clock back 50 years to when GG was 23 and you had to QUIT YOUR JOB in the public service if you married. YOUR HUSBAND had to sign your application for a passport and it was almost de riguer that you lost your own name and became Mrs George Smith. There was no single mothers pension, baby bonus, maternity leave, sexual harassment policy, child care payments, and very little “room” for women at university. Heavens you weren’t even allowed into the bar in a hotel.

I am a little younger than germaine but for me it was also an impossibility financially to have children and do things like postgraduate study with no assistance. And I so enjoy being judged for that as “irrelevant” while I paid and still pay taxes and fought all these years for you to have those conditions.

I think you need to be grateful to those who made the changes that allow you to enjoy whatever balance you chose in your life.

Those that have gone before are outdated and irrelevant? Those shoes you walk in are have most certainly been made more comfortable by G and her predecessors. Thanks to Germaine, and all the others who got astride those hobby horses and continue to ride them, and those to whom they pass the reins. CccrACK!

More worrying is that she repeated an exhortation she made at the F-Word Forum: that anti-Afghans read the Koran. She surely decided 50 years ago that all religion is divisive rubbish.

Margaret, I do believe that everyone should seek to understand that which they hate and fear. Ms Greer’s exhortation to read the Koran seems eminently sensible to me. Just as she, I’m sure, would ask anti-Christians to read the bible.

I’ve never been a fan of Germaine Greer or any feminist who thinks they can speak for me. However, having said that I didn’t see the program last night but I’m sure she wasn’t being unkind – just being Germaine. I’ve seen much, much worse by way of unkind remarks about the PM on Facebook. Some people have hideous thought processes.

…..and you’re all on here discussing our PM’s appearance and/or bitching about Germaine….pot, kettle, black. Let’s practise what we preach and get back onto policy. I think it is a great triumph that Ms Gillard got the mining tax through especially since it’s something which Mr Rudd could not do. This is an example of Ms Gillard’s great skill as a politician and a negotiator. Due to this success and others, in the policy field, I am really warming to her again. She is hard as nails. I love it.

I was really disappointed – it was a cheap laugh. I think I’d be a bit cooler with it if she was on record as being equally damning of other PMs appearances – did GG give Rudd a razzle for his daggy hairdo? Or John Howard for those famous eyebrows?

I get what Jane’s saying about the spur of the moment on national TV (I’ve had my own ridiculous moment under lights and cameras), but it was still a fairly unkind thing to say.

Either way, to make a joke about people’s appearance is never a nice move. It’s petty and reeks of schoolyard bullying. And if Julia’s got a “big arse”, then gees, I’d never want to meet Germaine for fear of what she might say about my larger frame. Because you know what? Those kind of digs still hurt.

If GG wants to make glib comment, let her comment. It was of no great importance, and pretty sure JG would only laugh at it. And no, Miranda Devine (why on earth Hoopla is quoting this hack I don’t know) it does not give every misogynist the right to attack her – BTW, they usually don’t have the brain to discuss clothing styles.

  44. Christina March 20, 2012 Reply

Her comments were irrelevant – why attack someone personally. However, those comments are likely to be ignored by others and the end result is that GG ends up looking rather irrelevant herself. It’s like a school yard bully who shouts something personal about someone and ends up losing any power they had over that person because they just look so silly. Unfortunately, women looking silly and/or bitchy in the media doesn’t really help those small minded enough to think that women can’t get along for long enough to do a good job. Unfortunately they are still out there.

Interesting!! Germaine Greer’s observation about Julia’s clothing are actually correct. The Prime Minister really needs to get a wardrobe conducive to her height and weight. I also find it interesting that people knock Germaine Greer for making comments about Julia, when in Parliament today Wayne Swann made some stupid comment about “Curly – one of the three stooges” in fact referring to Andrew Robb of the opposition. Julia (PM) along with Jenny Macklin and Anthony Albanese, all felt it appropriate to laugh at such a condescending comment. So don’t be too hard on Germaine for speaking the truth when Julia finds it appropriate to snigger at denigrating comments about the Opposition.

If that was all that Germaine said that caused all the hoopla, then everyone needs to get the hell over themselves. There are far worse things in this world than someone thinking Julia’s arse is big.

    IT IS!

I’ve thought it for ages, Julia’s jackets are NOT right for her body shape, and she needs to get out of heels because as we all know, when women wear heels for so long they stop standing straight and end up bent like a duck and then it makes one’s backside stick out like a duck. You don’t have to not be a feminist to think it, so for people to get their knickers in a bloody knot over something so trivial and stupid is just that, stupid!

I don’t like Julia, I’ve stated that many times before, but you don’t need to hate someone to think their arse is big. Besides, how many people who have replied here have actually thought it? You complain about her voice, why is it different? You complain about the way she runs the country, why is that different? You complain about the way she patronises people when she speaks to them. Why is it different to stating a fact? Her jackets DO NOT fit her and her arse IS big. Even my mother thinks so for God’s sake.

There is so much more going on in the world and this is made into such a big deal it’s bloody ridiculous!

Who cares if she dresses in a sack? What matters is how she runs the country. It’s obvious that too manty run their critical eye over the PMs looks than over her policies and methods.

I’m sure JG will take GG’s comments in the spirit they were intended, and so should we, and have a laugh whilst asking that age-old question, Does my bum look big in this?!

Thanks for the advice to go watch the iView version. And absolutely spot on Bridget! Ironically one of the early topics was whether Australians are stupid or politicians just think we are. The answer was that the media take the lowest common denominator and ‘make a story’ out of it. The majority of comment on the Q&A show was rich and intelligent, and GG provided most of it. None of the twitter comments lambasted her comment (although they were moderated). So I can’t understand how her ‘fat bum’ comments have become the story of the day. Perhaps not her best moment, but the resulting furore is the perfect example of what she was saying about the media constantly taking her comments out of context in order to sell a paper.

However, the PM, when a male, is only criticised for wearing Aussie tracksuits not his suit of workclothes. GG should try being on a fashion programme next time.(if one wouold have her)

Truly if that’s all anyone heard from GG’s response, it’s all very shallow. How about we keep it in perspective and stop encouraging the nonsense. Personally, I’d be far more offended by someone saying I should “experiement with the truth”, than someone saying I had “a big arse”.

Jeez haven’t we anything better to argue about than GG comment, which I do agree on, but then I bet GG or the PM could easily make a pertinent remark about my lack of dress sense, my less than perfection bod, even the car I choose to drive.
The Prime Minister choses to ignore vast numbers of the electorate over the preference for referenda, distribution of taxes, so any perceived comment should be taken on the chin. Possibly as a well meaning observation.

Dear Wendy Harmer, and other female commentators on GG’s comments. GG only spoke the truth, JG is supposed to be representing our country as she always likes to tell us, “I am Prime Minister” it is therefore a mandatory obligation for her to be dressed in an appropriate way. This I feel she fails to do. JG should have advice on which clothes suit her body type, at present it is obvious she does NOT have this advice. I am a woman of the 60′s and of the same era as GG, she is entitles to give her opinion on how JG dresses just as we are all giving our opinion’s now. As an older Australian woman if I had a chance I would certainly give JG an opinion privately on how she should dress, when you see her at international functions she FALLS SHORT and that reflects badly on AUSTRALIA.

What Germaine said was calculated intentionally to hurt Julia. Germaine knows the media will run with her cruel comments. What relevance is her arse to her value as a person ? Germaine’s comments appeal to those who voyeuristically get sadistic pleasure out of seeing others humiliated. Only sadists rationalize that Julia will ‘take it in her stride” or “get over it”. You don’t have to be nice (naive) to be decent. Research shows that verbal cruelty is just as damaging as physical violence. Don’t hide cruelty behind humour.

What Germaine said was calculated intentionally to put Germaine in the news. It’s not nice but the simple fact is that if she says something completely controversial (like her comments about Steve Irwin after his death) she’s going to get her head on the news and her message across… it’s something she’s very good at, like her or hate her, you can’t ignore her…

Yes, most of what Greer said was spot on, but she diminished herself, the Prime Minister and my intellect by indulging in such petty diatribe. On the ‘bright’ side, it caught out Abbott yet again.
